After 16 years living aboard and four different boats, I’ve learned that your first narrowboat doesn’t necessarily need to be your dream boat. Mine certainly wasn’t… I bought it from a bloke I met in a pub! 😂 Along the way I’ll talk about new versus second-hand boats, why I’d recommend hiring before buying, the reality of living off-grid as a continuous cruiser, and all the glamorous jobs that come with it — filling the water tank, emptying bins, lift bridges and, apparently, sweeping the bloody chimney. We also cross the spectacular Pontcysyllte Aqueduct, accidentally recruit some new crew, narrowly avoid kissing another narrowboat, and I somehow finish the day £30 richer. If you’re dreaming about buying your first narrowboat, hopefully this shows that you don’t necessarily need the perfect boat to begin the adventure.
